Day 16: Ruh Roh
Today’s Laura’s birthday… she just got on the phone with her parents, so I figure I have time to do a quick update.
Today was a pretty good day… nothing spectacular going on at work, just getting ready to head up to Arlington for the Arkansas game this weekend.
I went with my mom this afternoon to go visit Laura at the school for her birthday. We brought her cupcakes and juice to share with her kids as well as some flowers to go on here desk
I decided to go back to the mall one last time to see if I could find Laura’s raincoat that she wanted… this trip was finally a success! I found the red raincoat in her size that she tried on a few weeks ago.
So I snagged up her raincoat, then headed back home to head out on my run for the day. Everything was going well… the weather was beautiful – a little warm, but very nice.
I got about a half mile away making it back to the house, and my allergies got to me and I let out a huge sneeze while running. Immediately I thought of this episode of Parks and Recreation, where the boss sneezes and gives himself a hernia. But, pretty much as quickly as I’d thought about it, I forgot it and kept running.
After I got home, I got in the shower and noticed a weird pressure “down there.”
I got out, dried off, then hopped on the computer to check symptoms for a hernia: from the best I can tell, it looks and feels like I have an inguinal hernia. I’m going to call Scott & White tomorrow morning to go get it checked out.
Needless to say, this might throw a wrench in my whole workout plan… I’ll be sure to keep y’all updated on what’s going on.
Laura’s off the phone now, so I’m getting off the computer now.
Here’s today’s route:

So I’m sitting here in the Bright Complex waiting for Coach Sherman to make his appearance so the media can ask him all the same questions they did last week… We had a bye last weekend.
I decided I’d try updating my blog from the phone to see if it actually works.
I haven’t exercised yet today… I rather enjoyed sleeping in until 8. I think I’ve done alright diet-wise today, though: A small strawberry shake fom Jamba Juice with an energy boost for a total of 150 calories so far for the day.
Like I said earlier, I’m in the Bright Complex for the weekly football press conference. Last year this was always catered by Buppy’s… Not this year thanks to department budget cuts. It might all be for the best, though. Most weeks, Buppy’s menu consisted of mostly fried foods. And dessert… Buppy’s makes great desserts.
All that being said, I’m here for 3 hours (11-2) with no food. My stomach is already beginning to eat itsself. I brought a Special K cereal bar for a snack… I may have to break that bad boy open after Sherman steps out.
All for now, I’ll have a workout report later on…

Howdy!
Howdy!
My name is Jon and I’m fat… Not as fat as I was 6 months ago, but I’m still fat.
My weight loss journey started back in February of this year when I got the flu. That in and of itself is enough to lose weight… I lost about 8 pounds that week alone…. But, thanks to my wife’s persistence, I went to the doctor. Aside from telling me I had the flu (which I already knew, and why I didn’t want to go in the first place), my doctor and I had a heart-to-heart conversation about my weight. I was 23 years old and weighed 314 pounds (remember I’d already lost 8 pounds). He recommended I go on a strict diet using diet shakes that he prescribed. I know what you’re thinking: that sounds extreme. I agree, but he also pointed out that my weight was extreme as well… If I kept gaining weight, I was on a straight path for all kinds of weight-related issues including diabetes, heart disease, and possibly death. With that said, he suggested I go home, talk about it with my wife, and schedule the initial appointment when I was ready to make the commitment.
After thinking about it (and gaining back 6 of the 8 pounds I lost while I had the flu), I scheduled the appointment. Day 1 of this crazy diet, I weight 320 pounds. I was skeptical… mostly because of my lack of enthusiasm toward exercise… but I started my daily routine of 3 low-calorie, high-nutrient shakes and one Lean Cuisine-type meal a day. At most, I was consuming 700 calories a day. Normally, I would think this is absolutely insane, but I had comfort in the fact that I was being constantly monitored by my doctor. The exercise was not fun. It was hard. But it did get easier as time went on… eventually I went from only being able to walk around the track, to being able to run half a lap without stopping, then a full lap, then two, then a mile.
Fast forward to today, I’ve lost 97 pounds and am in the best shape of my life… which is great, but still sad at the same time. I’ve spent countless hours in the gym, run/walked hundreds of miles, but I’ve still got quite a ways to go. Over the last 2 months, work has taken over my life and instead of going to the gym at 6am like I had been doing, I’ve been getting to the office at 6am and working through the night. Now that work has slowed back down, I’m looking to refocus my life around a new exercise routine.
I have 2 reasons for starting this blog… both equally important. The first: Accountability. I’ve lost a lot of the drive I had 2 months ago to go to gym daily, so I figured if I have people keeping up with my progress, I should have sufficient motivation to keep going. Which brings me to my second reason for starting this blog: Motivation. Hopefully, if there are others out there reading this who need to lose weight, they can see that it’s possible. Maybe you think my initial weight-loss method was extreme and unsafe… that’s fine… it definitely worked, but my goal is to lose the next 40 pounds with normal diet and exercise.
To be honest, I don’t have a specific exercise or diet plan at this point, but I am going to exercise every day for the next year and post my progress here. Feel free to leave comments, post your weight-loss tips, or just read along.
I hope this will be more than just a weight-loss blog. While that will be my main focus, I plan to give y’all insight into the life of the Lee’s along the way as well.
I’m off to get a good night’s sleep and will start Day 1 tomorrow.
Thanks for reading!!
